Allison Crutchfield - Tourist In This Town

I don't know if there's such a thing as synth-folk, but I can't think of a better classification for Allison Crutchfield’s new album. The music here is mainly made up of simple acoustic arrangements over beds of atmospheric synths. That's when it's not going full bore on a style of production that reminds me of classic New Order. In those songs it's her vocals, with the unmistakable twang she shares with her sister, that defiantly declare their folk roots.

Heartfelt, fragile and unguarded, her voice on this record is like an open wound. The emotions on this record are brought front and centre by her performance, be it nostalgia, romance, or a kind of bittersweet hopefulness. Where the instrumentation is subtle, the vocals are decidedly and wonderfully not.

And on top of the performance aspects, the songwriting is also excellent. It's great all around.
