David Bowie - Blackstar
David Bowie - Blackstar
An obvious candidate even before recent events. I’ve been listening through his back catalogue all week. He was truly a genius.
This record will probably never be fully removed from its context as Bowie’s ‘death record’. But over time, the association will diminish, and the music will have to stand on its own. So thank god that it’s a masterpiece.
Seriously, this is the best record from Bowie since his classic period (which I say ends with Let’s Dance).
Dark, experimental, rich with melodies and deeply thematic. But what really separates this album from something like The Next Day is that it’s not nostalgic or backward looking at all.
The previous record was seen as a return to form, and it was indeed, in every sense. The songs on that record could have been written by Bowie 40 years earlier - but his age-ravaged voice couldn’t sustain their energy in the way he used to. The highlight of that record was the slow and sombre Where Are We Now?
The Next Day is still a good record, but Blackstar is a huge leap forward in terms of Bowie finding a sound to suit him in old age. To that effect, he favours more rhythmic, less vocally demanding (but still interesting) melodies, and a rich jazz-infused backing. He really leans into the quavers of his wizened voice, and the results are hugely emotional.
Honestly, you’ve probably already listened to it. But if you haven’t - please do.
