Deafheaven - New Bermuda

Deafheaven - New Bermuda

If typical black metal feels like being swallowed up by an abyss, Deafheaven’s music feels like being swallowed up by the sun. Or at least it did on 2013′s Sunbather (appropriately enough), one of the highlights of that year and of this decade.

On New Bermuda, it feels like we’re looking up at that sun from the bottom of that abyss.

Incorporating more familiar black metal elements into their music, while still holding on to some of the cleaner and warmer sounds of their last record, Deafheaven have released another classic. I doubt it will be as celebrated as Sunbather in ten years time, but it’s still truly great.

And it, along with Sunbather, are excellent starting points to anyone hoping to explore the darker extremes of rock music.
