Fuzz - II
People sometimes complain that today’s popular music is too backward looking. Too many artists inspired by sounds from the ‘80s, or the ‘70s, or whenever. There’s not enough of a defined sound of now, these people will say.
I don`t much buy in to that line of thinking. Beyond the fact that the idea of a “defined sound” of an era is always something that’s determined in retrospect - I quite like that we have bands that sound like they’re from the bygone decades. Despite all the changes in music, we can still imagine how it might have gone differently. We can make new changes from a previous starting point, develop new sounds within an old style.
Ty Segall fits that description. As do his bandmates in Fuzz.
This is a record that is clearly indebted to late ‘60s garage and psychedelic, along with early ‘70s hard rock and proto-metal. Like a messier Black Sabbath.
But they make it their own. There’s always a new idea or an interesting turn on every one of these songs. It’s a very engaging and entertaining listen, even for those with rock-fatigue.

Highlights: Pollinate • Burning Wreath • Silent Sits The Dust Bowl
