Meilyr Jones - 2013
Meilyr Jones - 2013
This album takes the idea of baroque pop further than any I’ve ever heard: some of these songs sound like they could have been performed by a traveling bard in the Renaissance (albeit one with an enormous backing band full of horns and harpsichords). At other times, Meilyr Jones’s songs recall the vocal expressionism of Morrissey or Bowie. And there’s also a clear debt to the more ornate works of the Beatles.
Influences aside, this album has a truly unique sound. You won’t hear another one like it this year.
And despite the eccentricities, there’s a clear pop instinct at work in the songwriting. It’s definitely worth a spin or two to get your head around it.
