Shopping - Why Choose
Shopping - Why Choose
If, for the rest of my life, I had to exclusively listen to music released in a specific year, I’m pretty sure I’d pick 1979. Or ‘80, or ‘81. I’d have to do a bit of research, but it would be around then.
Thank god I don’t have to though, or I wouldn’t be able to hear the music made by the people who’d pick the same year.
Shopping are one of those bands who specialize in that particular strand of post-punk that was pioneered by groups like Gang Of Four, The Slits, The Au Pairs, and so many more. That minimal, rhythmic, so so very good kind.
You’d think, with so many modern bands dipping into this same well, that a band like Shopping would sound stale. But they manage to eke out more than an inch of originality on this record. The speedy riffs of guitar and bass interweave and interlock so deftly, that it’s even more impressive when you realize the vocalists are doing the same thing with their voices. The energy is at almost full blast the entire half-hour this album is going, and it’s incredibly fun the entire time.
