The Hotelier - Goodness

The Hotelier - Goodness

Goodness! Well there’s an eye-catching cover for you. Uncensored version here.

Is it just me or does most so-called emo music fail to evoke any emotion? Oh sure, the singers usually belt their guts out, and there’s a big emphasis on supposedly stirring lyrics - but neither manages to move me. It’s just usually much too polished and perfected for me to really believe it. There’s no edge to it.

But every now and then, the genre produces a record that manages to live up to the name. The Hotelier remember that emo is actually a subsection of punk rock, and that punk rock is more than power chords. There’s a raggedness and a deep melancholy to this record, even as it excites and energizes.

That, plus strong songwriting and an experimental streak make this easily the best emo record since La Dispute’s Rooms Of The House.
