Allan Kingdom - Northern Lights
Allan Kingdom - Northern Lights
Here’s a nice surprise. I had no prior experience of Allan Kingdom beyond his feature on Kanye’s All Day, and here he is dropping a very accomplished and entertaining mixtape. And in a style of hip-hop that hasn’t really connected with me before now.
I’d hesitate to call it trap rap, if only because of prior associations with some music that I don’t really enjoy. This is more like the new style of trap that is being spearheaded by Travis Scott, and popularized by Fetty Wap. Only this record has more subtlety and sophistication than both.
There’s also a lot of contemporary underground style on this mixtape. The vocal delivery in particular reminds me of the halting, twice-considered flow of someone like Milo, if he did more rap-singing.
Anyway, like I said: this tape really surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. It’s really very good. I didn’t even mention the quality of the production!
