Allie X - Girl With No Face

Allie X - Girl With No Face

Allie X, the queen of gothic synth pop, returns with a  collection of darkly tongue-in-cheek dance bangers covering such disco-appropriate subjects as physical abuse, body dysmorphia, and depression. And it’s a hell of a good time.

The music here echoes the darkness of her lyrics by quoting the original masters of synthpop. Namely, the motorik rhythms and primitive electronics of Kraftwerk. She’s definitely cribbing from The Model in John and Jonathan, right? And those shadowy synth and drum machine textures are reminiscent of classic New Order.

This one goes to some zany places - is the backing track on You Slept On Me inspired by Flashdance?! And she has a strong ear for melodrama, camp and comedy (Off With Her Tits!). But her songwriting is always gorgeous and impeccable, with razor-sharp production - betraying an exceptionally good taste.

And she is, as ever, a fantastic performer. With a mastery over her own voice. Capable of capturing the appropriate flavour of tragedy, irony, or even horror in every song.

Highly recommended. Streaming below via Bandcamp.
