Rose Elinor Dougall - Stellular

Rose Elinor Dougall - Stellular

Here's an album that will hook you immediately, provided you have a taste for 80s style synth-pop or new wave. The opening riff of Colour Of Water is bewitching in itself, but the genius of it is how that clever little melody goes on to form the backbone of the song. On every song after that, Dougall showcases a similar natural talent for song-craft and style. She's really got this down.

She uses those instincts to build a tripped out world of spacey guitar, ethereal synths, and motorik rhythms. Her vocals cut through the atmospherics with a sort of alien detachment. At about the halfway point, she switches gears into something more human and heartfelt, but equally vibrant and addictive. No matter the mood, her melodies are incredibly catchy in the most unusual ways.

This isn't a debut, but it feels like a re-invention. It's not often you hear such obvious pop talent.
