Ty Segall - Ty Segall
Ty Segall - Ty Segall
Where Ty Segall's last album under his own name (Emotional Mugger) saw him leaning heavily into the noisier elements of his signature sound, his new self-titled record has him in a more classic and nostalgic mood. He's looking to power pop and flower pop here, to bands like T. Rex, the Replacements, the Kinks, and the Beatles. As a result, the songs here seem to be more focused on melody and whimsy than any he's ever written.
Or at least, they do for a little while. Every one of these songs eventually dissolves or devolves into noise and dissonance. In this way, Segall is adapting classic pop and rock song structures and making them his own. To this project he brings his natural rockstar bravado and combativeness, making this an invigorating listen.
Have a listen. It's less experimental than Emotional Mugger, but no less masterful.
