Austra - Future Politics

Austra - Future Politics

Here's some lovely electronic pop that often leans more towards electronic than pop. The production is mellowed out and atmospheric, full of shuffling, clacking beats and stately, meditative synths. On top of that are the hyper-emotive, almost operatic vocals from singer and songwriter Katie Stelmanis. The sound overall reminds me of a brighter, more ambient version of the Knife.

That brightness, that optimism, is what makes this album different from most synthpop. Most use the artificiality of electronic instrumentation to evoke distress of disaffection in an age of cynicism and isolation. But Austra sees no reason to despair. They take the long view, imagining a shining future where reason and emotion aren't enemies.

It's that thematic unity, along with the subtle energy in the slow ambience of the production, that make this album a must-listen.
