Christian Scott - Stretch Music

Christian Scott - Stretch Music

Oh hey, jazz! Remember jazz? No? Me neither.

Oh wait, I remember. It’s that genre of music that was so vibrant and progressive throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s and part of the ‘70s, and then stagnated and splintered for decades because stodgy traditionalists didn’t like Miles Davis anymore. That’s the one! Yep... Wait, what was I gonna say?

Oh, yeah. I think it’s coming back.

The pluralism of this century’s music world is providing the perfect environment for new jazz artists to emerge and prosper.  Jazz artists that actually want to make new and interesting music, not just rehash classic sounds. It’s fantastic.

There was Polar Bear’s latest earlier this year, then Kamasi Washington’s great record, and now this.

Christian Scott has been operating for a while, but Stretch Music is the first time he’s come up on my radar. The record is more traditional than the other two I mentioned, but it replaces the rhythmic base of the songs with sounds and textures from electronic and ambient music. This provides an interesting bed of sound for the extremely talented improvisers to play around in, and that fusion has incredible results.
