Sexwitch - Sexwitch
Sexwitch - Sexwitch
So I was revisiting some of last week’s interesting releases (because this week has been slim pickings, if I’m honest). And I guess I didn’t realize how good this was the first time through, because it really hit me hard in a way it hadn’t before.
Sexwitch is made up of Bat For Lashes’ Natasha Khan on vocals, with Toy (who put out the underrated Join The Dots in 2013) as a backing band.
This record is made up of covers of obscure folk, psychedelic, and world music tunes dug up by Khan and her producer. But the borrowed nature of this album doesn’t really show in any way. Everything is so cohesive and complementary that it really surprised me when I read that these weren’t originals. I expect if I heard the first recordings it would be difficult to recognize them.
The sound of the record is a sort of primal psychedelia. It’s very based on grooves and rhythms, with chant-like, sometimes yelping and shrieking vocals. At the same time it’s incredibly tuneful and catchy. It’s very seductive and (ahem) bewitching stuff, I don’t think there’s been a better synergy between band name and material this year.
