Cruciamentum - Charnel Passages

Cruciamentum - Charnel Passages

This album is more heavy, relentless, and aggressive than the last metal record I put up here. But they’re similar in a way: they’re both very focused on mood and atmosphere.

Not that this is atmospheric in the sense that it’s hazy. I’d call this technical metal before I’d ever call it shoegaze (not that it’s really either of those).

No, the sound of this album is pretty different from most death metal releases I’ve heard this year. There’s a definite focus on tempo changes, harmonics, and melodic progression. And there’s these spacey guitar licks on the majority of these tracks that give the band an identifiable signature.

If you’re not really a metal-head (and I wasn’t until a couple of years ago), I’d suggest the Mgla record before this one. But for those who like this kind of thing, or are expanding their musical horizons, enjoy!
