Milo - So The Flies Don’t Come

Milo - So The Flies Don’t Come

Another great release from hyper-verbal underground rapper Milo.

Milo is one of those rappers who is more interested in evoking meaning than in making it clear what he means. He layers reference upon reference, each more obscure than the last, delivered with a relaxed flow reminiscent of spoken word poetry. And progressing according to the flow of his consciousness. His music really captures the meaning of “abstract hip hop”.

He also seems to be as interested in the actual sound of words as much as their meanings. He chooses his lyrics and rhyming schemes carefully, and they always, always sound interesting. That’s a rare quality in hip hop today, where the trend seems to be a competition to see who can be the most slurred and mush-mouthed.

The production here is spare, but elegant. All the better, because the real fireworks are in the vocals. Listen to it.
