Drake - More Life
Drake - More Life
Why is it that Drake's so-called mixtapes (or in this case, a "playlist") are so good when his latest big release was so hit and miss? It's not just that he's rapping more on this release, because even the tracks where he's singing are more consistently good than on Views. I think it's just that his whole downbeat style thrives when he's delivering his vocals over something more simplified. His natural charisma comes through stronger when there's less to distract from it.
But there are more shadows and solemnity here, too. It has more grit and atmosphere, a lot like his last mixtape. But unlike If You're Reading This, the style here is full of the kind of mellow dancey electronics that we last heard on Hotline Bling - a song that Views rather disappointingly failed to live up to. But More Life seems to be correcting that mistake. This tape is jam-packed with songs that are riffing on that style - yeah, it's pretty long, but I was never bored.
There's a lot to like here; good vocals, good production, really good features. Try it out if you haven't already.
