Dumal - The Lesser God
Dumal - The Lesser God
A good way to tell good metal from bad is to check how it's depicting the negative emotions that are the genre's purview. It shouldn't glamorize or glorify or in any way justify the anger and hatred and ugliness. Instead it should examine those emotions as an abstraction or concept. It shouldn't sound like the musicians are feeling the emotion, but that the music itself is. It's not about raging out, it's about making something beautiful out of something ugly. The call of the void.
Dumal's debut full-length exemplifies that ideal perfectly. They create an atmosphere of desolation and despair that overwhelms and draws you in until you're drowning. They do so with an immense technical and melodic skill, crafting songs that linger in the mind long after they're over.
It's an early high point for metal in 2017. Here's hoping it's a good omen.
