Mgła - Exercises In Futility

Mgła - Exercises In Futility

As far as the predominant moods in metal go, I tend to prefer crushing hopelessness to blistering rage. I don’t know what that says about me, but there you go.

Anyway, this is the hopelessness variety. Despite that, it doesn’t wear you down or exhaust you. At least, not in an unpleasant way.

That’s because it’s gorgeous. Incredibly beautiful. The melodies that emerge out of the onslaught of this record are some of the best I’ve heard in black metal. This is the best metal record I’ve listened to since starting this project*, and it might be my favourite heavy rock release so far this year.

* including Iron Maiden, Nile, Motörhead, Axis, Ahab, Hammercult, Putridity, Pentagram, Soilwork and a few others I can’t remember

Highlights: Exercises In Futility II • Exercises In Futility IV • Exercises In Futility V
