Erick The Architect - I’ve Never Been Here Before
Erick The Architect - I’ve Never Been Here Before
Every now and then I come across an album that - even though I love every song - I find myself imagining an alternate sequence to the track list. I’ve Never Been Here Before, the new collection of hazy, vibey hip-hop by Erick the Architect (MC and producer for the Flatbush Zombies) is one of those albums.
To me at least, it seems like the sequencing of this album is the reverse of what it ought to be. The tracks that it begins with (after the intro I Am Still) should be the ones it ends with. It starts too slow, sentimental, and contemplative - in a way that could fail to adequately hook the listener. If instead we went into the MF DOOM channeling Mandevillain and the incredible sequence of tracks that follow it, we would instead be drawn into the energy of this album much quicker.
Because it really becomes clear what this album is really all about when you hear Ezekiel’s Wheel, the next track. The vibes, the beats, the hooks and the flow all come together as a single entity. It all falls into place and then we’re off, we’re drifting, we’re going to wherever Erick wants to take us. This is one of those rare hip-hop albums that can genuinely be described as dreamy.
But y’know, it works Erick’s way too. And who am I to question? I loved it anyway.
Apparently James Blake was involved in the production here? That’s kinda interesting. I guess I can hear his signature in the discordant chiming electronics and deep bass in some of these tracks.
Anyway, I’m still drifting. So, have a listen and join me.
Highlights: Ezekiel’s Wheel • Jammy Jam • Too Much Talkin
