Little Kid - A Million Easy Payments

Little Kid - A Million Easy Payments

Here’s a beautiful little discovery.

I’ve seen more than one person write that this record sounds like a male-fronted version of Big Thief. And honestly, it sounds so much like he’s channeling Adrianne Lenker that I was surprised to learn Little Kid started as a band five years before Masterpiece. I guess that speaks to the power of our frames of reference when experiencing art.

Not that there’s a lack of originality here. The unadorned rock and folk instrumentation in these songs eventually blossoms into increasingly complex, jazz-inflected arrangements of strings, piano and flute. It’s gorgeous stuff.

There’s such a gentleness to this music, such a supreme simplicity. A deep and timeless quiet. A patience.

And it’s because of that patience - that craftsmanship - that this record is leagues better than so many of the more highly produced and polished albums that come out every week.
