Guilty Simpson - Detroit’s Son
Guilty Simpson - Detroit’s Son
There was a wealth of solid hip-hop releases this week, but my favourite of them is probably the lowest in profile. You might see a few more of those records on here, but this is the one I’d recommend the most.
Simpson’s lyrics and flow are steady and reliable, with a good amount of grit. His delivery is strong enough to anchor the album even if he returns to the same lyrical themes again and again (did you know he’s from Detroit?).
But the real strengths of this album are in the production and songcraft. The sound of this record really encapsulates Detroit’s rich musical history and diversity. Rock, funk, soul, and techno all slathered with a healthy layer of grime. And they way those influences combine is fantastic.
