Jimmy Montague - Tomorrow’s Coffee
Jimmy Montague - Tomorrow’s Coffee
Jimmy Montague apparently comes out of the world of emo rock. But there’s no clue to that in this sophomore solo record. No, this is a collection of jaunty retro pop songs: complete with shooby-do-bops and sha-la-la-la-la’s.
The touchpoint seems to be that particular strain of sophisticated jazz influenced pop made popular in the ‘60s by songwriters like Burt Bacharach. There’s also a touch of bossa nova. Some Girl From Ipanema vibes, for sure.
But this is more than easy listening. There’s such a depth of pure, old-fashioned musicianship here. Just listen as the tinkling piano, crunchy guitar and chiming synth trade off in All The Same. Listen as a jazzy interlude transitions seamlessly into a guitar solo in the brilliant track Here Today (Without You Tomorrow).
It’s just so good. Every song offering up a complex feast of musical delights beneath its subtle, soft-spoken, sophisticated pop-rock. Every element is immaculately arranged and perfectly positioned. It just sounds timeless.
I don’t know. I guess I’m just a complete sucker for this kind of stuff. Highly recommended.
