Schoolboy Q isn’t pushing rap in any new directions here. But who cares?
When a person is this good at the thing they do, then all they need to do is that thing. And what Q does is classic down and dirty gangsta rap with such virtuosity and variation that it elevates itself above throwback.
These songs are stuffed with ideas. The beats change. The flows change. All the features are great, and they change things up too. Honestly the only complaint I could understand about Blue Lips is that it’s a bit overstuffed. But when the album is already pushing an hour, and you have this many good ideas, who can blame you if you move between them quickly?
Hazy jazz interpolations, classic g-funk grooves, skittering electronics, gritty East Coast style rock-rap beats: it’s all here. And Q’s chameleonic charisma means he can rap in any style, at any speed, over any beat, and sound like he invented it.
