Sheer Mag - Playing Favorites

I love Sheer Mag. There’s no band that is as purely devoted to crafting old-fashioned hard-rocking power pop. Their music sounds is like they liquefied the essence of Van Halen or Cheap Trick or Joan Jett and poured it through a lo-fi indie filter.

And they hew closely to that lo-fi aesthetic. Christina Halladay’s powerful and dynamic vocals are as usual recorded in that distinctly pseudo-amateurish way that defines the Sheer Mag sound. It’s a conscious choice, and it adds a lot to the feel of these songs, but I guess it could turn some people off. It really works for me. And it always has.

As for this album in particular: Sheer Mag are dipping their toes into some country-sounding textures a couple of times on this album (Golden Hour). But it’s clear that they are more devoted than ever to just making fun rock songs. And I hope they keep doing it forever.

I hope you give it a listen. If you can get past any aesthetic or stylistic allergy you might have, you’ll find some carefully crafted, infectiously catchy, pop-rock bangers.
