Kim Gordon - The Collective
Kim Gordon - The Collective
I don’t think this is a trap album, despite whatever marketing buzz-phrases are going around. Honestly, sometimes the discourse about a record is obnoxious enough that I’m tempted to discount the music entirely. Do these people know what trap is?
That said, this record deserves your attention. It’s not trap (obviously), but it is an excellent industrial no-wave noise record. And the inclusion of the vocal mods (which I guess is the “trap” part) gives it a unique feel and sound in that space.
Full of scraping, screeching noise, deep reverberating beats, crunching synths. It’s intense and it’s always interesting.
And Kim! Her spoken, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Her voice floating somewhere between detachment and desperation. It’s amazing that she’s producing something this essential and engaging this far into her career.
Solidly recommended. Streaming below via YouTube.
Highlights: I’m A Man • Psychedelic Orgasm • The Believers
