The Army, The Navy - Fruit For Flies
The Army, The Navy - Fruit For Flies
This album begins with a rustic acoustic guitar strumming out a repeating riff. Soon it’s joined by a single female voice singing a lovely melody. And at this point, you might think “oh, it’s one of these”. A “singer-songwriter” album. One of many female-fronted folk records that appear every week. It’s not a mark against it, there are plenty of great records within that category. This one already seems to be one of the better examples.
But then the second voice enters. And then the second guitar. And this record becomes something else entirely. The voices form a perfect harmony. The guitar lines dance in perfect counter-melody. And when the horns and drums enter, you already know you’re hearing something special.
Fruit For Flies is the debut EP of the singing and songwriting duo Sasha Goldberg & Maia Ciambriello. It’s a collection of some early singles with the addition of a few new songs. Those singles got some attention and drummed up some anticipation, but this is my first time hearing them. The music here is folk-infused indie pop, sometimes dreamy, sometimes with splashes of jazz or R&B. But always with the incredible sound of their combined voices.
I can’t describe the pleasure of finding something like this after sampling twenty or so other new releases that didn’t hook me. It really validates my belief that greatness and talent are apparent pretty much immediately. Good albums make themselves known in the first three tracks. Great albums make themselves known in the first three seconds.
