Roly Porter - Third Law

Roly Porter - Third Law

How can a genre of music called drone or ambient ever produce a record that isn’t mind-numbingly boring? Simple, just have the music not be droning or particularly ambient.

The level of dynamism in these compositions makes ‘drone’ a clear misnomer, and I wouldn’t say this music is really ambient, because it doesn’t fade in to the background at all. It’s certainly atmospheric, but in a way that commands attention.

Seriously, some of the stuff on this album blows my mind. I’ll call particular attention to the beat of the song Mass. The way he uses that accelerating drum loop as the underlying structure of the song is incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything quite like that.

Anyway, this is not one of my favourite genres, so when I recommend something like this, you know it’s one of the best of its kind.
