Sheherazaad - Qasr
Sheherazaad - Qasr
Mysterious and magical art-folk. Sung, I believe, almost completely in Urdu. This is not music that is strictly beholden to any particular South Asian tradition of music. Rather it uses the contours of the language and the cultural idioms as a jumping off point to veer into experiments with sound and genre. There are unexpected journeys into psychedelic Americana and baroque pop.
Sheherazaad has a beautiful and bewitching voice, spinning from throaty balladry to wailing falsetto. It’s a treat to listen to.
Like I said in the Klittens review: a lot of good EPs out this week. This one isn’t even the last of the bunch. You’ll probably see at least one more posted next week.
But for now, this is a strong recommendation.
