Wiley - Godfather
Wiley - Godfather
Supposedly Wiley's final album, though I wonder if he'll reconsider given that it's such a success (both critically and financially). The so-called godfather of grime has shed pretty much every pop convention that has adhered itself to his genre - going back to the bass-heavy basics of his signature eskibeat, while also incorporating elements of grime's new wave of emerging and underground talent. He's looking to the past and the future here, and has come up with a near masterpiece.
Musically, this is grime at its best. With its frantic, menacing, pulsing beats and the defiance and confidence of the mile-a-minute flows of Wiley and his collaborators, there's barely a chance to catch a breath for Godfather's nearly hour-long runtime. That may seem a daunting length, but there's no filler here.
It's totally worth the listen, and if you haven't delved much into UK hip hop, this is a great introduction.
