Beach House - Thank Your Lucky Stars
Beach House - Thank Your Lucky Stars
Well... uh. Hmm. This is a pleasant surprise.
I wasn’t expecting for anyone to join the two-timer’s club until at least next year. But Beach House doesn’t care about my expectations, and decided to release a full-length album anyway. A month and a half after their last one.
This was apparently recorded at the same time as Depression Cherry, but it’s definitely not a collection of b-sides. And it’s not really a sister album in any way, the two records are actually very dissimilar (as far as releases by the same artist go).
It’s more like an inverted reflection of the previous record, or a shadow. You can imagine them finishing their recording sessions and realizing they had two distinct, incompatible sets of songs - all good enough for release. One set was lush and lofty, but with tightly controlled emotions; and one was more stripped down and raw, with tighter melodies and more expressive singing.
So... two albums then.
If I had to pick between the two, I’d pick this one. The sounds on this record aren’t anything new for Beach House, but the songwriting is more vibrant and interesting across the board. I still love Depression Cherry, but it could use a bit of this one’s energy.
You probably don’t need me to tell you to listen to it, but I’m going to anyway. Listen to it. It’s streaming in full via Sub Pop’s YouTube channel.
Highlights: One Thing • The Traveller • Somewhere Tonight
