Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven

Mannequin Pussy - I Got Heaven

Some hardcore punk-infused indie rock and pop. The music press seems to be going crazy for this one in a way that I have to admit I don’t fully understand. But it’s hard to deny that this record is pretty damn good.

Especially when it’s going for that hardcore sound.

When it isn’t, it’s instead going for a sort of dreamy, grungy pop-rock sound. And it’s solid and catchy and well-made. If this were the main sound of the record, it’s probable I would have posted it here eventually.

But, when it is! That’s when things get really fun. The opening track is full of a crazed energy that kicks the door down. The record immediately softens after that, and it takes until about halfway through the tracklist to hit that level of energy again. But it’s not an unpleasant wait, and then we spend the rest of the record getting pleasantly pummeled.

This probably sounds like a weaker than usual recommendation. But really it’s not. My feelings here are formed in the context of the effusive praise this record has received from all corners. That I merely think it’s really good instead of a top ten contender should not discourage anyone from trying it out.
