Revival Season - Golden Age Of Self Snitching

Revival Season - Golden Age Of Self Snitching

Revival Season are an Atlanta-based underground hip-hop duo that I initially pinned as a cross between Death Grips and Run the Jewels.

Obviously that’s very good company to be in. And certainly Golden Age Of Self Snitching is full of the same quasi-industrial electronic beats and the relentless flow you might find on a Death Grips record, And it definitely has the lyrical and technical bombast and pure fun of a Run the Jewels record.

But as I listened, the more shallow the comparison seemed.

Jonah Swilley’s production here isn’t just industrial, it’s a deeply varied and versatile mixing and layering of electronics, rock and reggae instrumentation. The sheer denseness of the sound hearkens back to the sampledelics of something like Paul’s Boutique.

And BEZ’s rapping is athletic and inventive in a way that’s wholly distinct from Killer Mike or El-P. And his political outlook and lyrical themes are sophisticated and seamlessly integrated with the hooks and technical fireworks.

It’s really an immensely strong full-length debut. Probably the best hip-hop album I’ve heard this year.
