Shaina Hayes - Kindergarten Heart

Shaina Hayes - Kindergarten Heart

Some lovely tender folk music.

There’s a closeness to nature being evoked here. And it’s not just in the beautiful imagistic lyrics with its references to “skies of little fires”, “sparkly sunny days” and “distant misty sea[s]”. No, it’s also in the music, with it’s acoustic riffs trickling like a stream and crackling like a bonfire.

There’s a sensory quality here. A scent. Sun-cooked pinewood and rain on mossy rocks. It’s like a cottage in the woods.

Shaina Hayes’s vocal delivery reminds me a good deal of Laura Marling’s, with its wry, ageless quality. She bends from wisdom to innocence on a whim as she spins these subtly bewitching melodies.

This one grows on me with every listen. Strongly recommended.
