Molly Burch - Please Be Mine

Molly Burch - Please Be Mine

God, I'm such a sucker for this kind of stuff. Whether it's the old school of Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee, or the new wave of Angel Olsen and Mothers: if your style is sadly sweet country-pop with alternately sighing and then soaring vocals, you've pretty much got me as a guaranteed fan. It helps when the songwriting is this good, too.

Molly Burch has an endearingly stuttery, stop-start style of singing. It really gets across the romance and heartbreak and sorrow that is the predominant subject of these songs. The backing is incredibly tight, exemplifying an old-fashioned type of musicianship. It's great stuff.

Yep, this is easily the prettiest album I've heard this year. But there's enough bitterness and complexity here to make it more than just a sweet treat.
