Sam Evian - Plunge

Sam Evian - Plunge

Some retro-flavoured psych-pop.

Sam Evian is clearly a big fan of the Beatles. And who isn’t? But those For You Blue guitar licks on Jacket indicate that he’s more than just a fan, he’s a student. Song structure, counter-melody, rhythm, it all evokes the Beatles and their contemporaries. That particularly perfect pop-craftsmanship that was so prevalent in the ‘60s.

It’s not a pastiche though! There’s plenty of modern indie-isms here, along with a a few alt-country touches. And it’s not like it could be mistaken for an album of that era. But it’s just super clear where Sam learned to write a song. And it would be hard to pick better teachers.

Solidly recommended.
