The Cactus Blossoms - You’re Dreaming
The Cactus Blossoms - You’re Dreaming
How’s this for a change of pace?
Focusing exclusively on recently released music means that there are some elements of my tastes that I’ll almost never get to talk about. So I’m jumping on this opportunity to declare that I love oldies. I LOVE them.
Seriously, my entire taste in music is informed by the time I spent marathoning singles from the ‘50s. My love of classic pop song structure, vocal harmonies, and rock minimalism - it all comes from old-time rock, R&B, and hillbilly music.
The Cactus Blossoms sound like they come right from that era. If you played me this record and told me they were some obscure Everly Brothers imitators that released one album in 1961, it would probably take me quite a while to figure out the truth.
But they’re more than imitators, these guys know the ins and outs of the very specific era they’re borrowing their sound from. And they’re natural songwriters, which helps quite a bit in elevating this above pastiche.
I don’t know how much of an audience there is for this kind of music nowadays, but I sure appreciate it. If it sounds even remotely interesting to you, I’d strongly recommend it.
