Van Houten - The Tallest Room
Van Houten - The Tallest Room
Some lovely, lo-fi, hazy, jangly indie rock.
This sort of laidback ‘90s style indie rock is a pretty tried and true formula. So it’s surprising how many bands fail to do it right. Perhaps they don’t realize that laidback is just a feeling that the music evokes, not an instruction on how to make it. To make this stuff work, you need to make a conscious, careful effort.
It’s obvious that Van Houten are putting that effort into their music. The rhythm section creates a down-to-earth and dreamy pulse. The guitar melodies ripple and shimmer and blaze out of this background. And the half-whispered vocals echo and layer until the whisper becomes a scream.
Recommended for anyone looking for a throwback with some substance.
It’s been a banner week for great new releases. And this hidden gem will likely get little appreciation because of it. But it’s worth seeking out.
