Your Old Droog - Packs
Your Old Droog - Packs
It's not difficult to understand what makes Packs so good. When you take classic '90s New York boom bap style, deliver it with dexterity and technical skill, and add in a few high-profile features, you're bound to get something at least worth listening to. But this isn't a paint-by-numbers release. There's a surreal, hallucinogenic quality to this music that makes it unique and brings it into the modern era.
There's also tons of diversity in the production. There are some blistering horn flares, a few old-fashioned soul samples that are slashed with record scratches, a bit of weird Middle Eastern flute, and whole bunch of relaxed funky bass. These elements are mixed and whirled together into a vaguely psychedelic end-product. It will keep you guessing from moment to moment.
Like I said, it's not hard to understand. Good vocals, good production, and good writing will tend to give you a good record. You can judge for yourself.
