Rata Negra - Oído Absoluto
Rata Negra - Oído Absoluto
There are few micro-genres going stronger these days than the mostly Madrid-based Spanish punk surge. The endearingly low-fi style that’s featured in cross-over records by Mourn and Hinds sees its apotheosis in Rata Negra’s ragged, frantic, high-energy music. And it shows that charisma can cross the language barrier, as evidenced by the singer’s declarative barking and wailing.
It also exemplifies how punk rock can be great pop music, without veering into “pop-punk”. With short bursts of simple but clever melodies, each song is it’s own little gem. The guitars pick out classic punk and power-pop patterns, backed by primitive but airtight rhythms. I can only imagine it was a blast to record, and that sense of fun is infectious.
Gotta thank Stereogum for turning me on to this one. It’s a scuzzy little diamond in the rough.
