Sallie Ford - Soul Sick

Sallie Ford - Soul Sick

Is it possible for an album to be perfect without being "great"? That's "great" in the sense of "the Great Albums". You know, the ones that push music in bold new directions and all that. Because Soul Sick isn't a particularly original or experimental record, but I'd still call it perfect. It accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, and doesn't make a misstep for the entire runtime. Seriously, there isn't a song on here that I don't like.

This is an incredibly deft fusion of classic 60s garage rock with quintessential Americana and roots music. There are wonderful little riffs on jazz, blues, bluegrass, country and southern rock along the way. That's a lot of genre fusion, and it wouldn't really work if the instrumentation wasn't so tight and balanced. But what really makes the record is Ford's blunt emotionality and forceful, throaty vocals.

It's constantly surprising, and totally endearing. Have a listen.
