Sacred Paws - Strike A Match
Sacred Paws - Strike A Match
And now for something a bit happier. Sacred Paws take the brilliantly ramshackle post-punk of bands like the Raincoats and the Slits and combines it with sunny, vibrant Afro-pop. The obvious point of comparison is Paul Simon’s Graceland, or the work of Vampire Weekend. But Strike A Match is going for something more relaxed and low-key.
There’s a level of musicianship on display here, but it’s subtle. The simplicity and minimalism disguises the richness of melody. Full of jittering guitar, tumbling and polyrhythmic bass and drum lines, bouncy and blaring horns (or sometimes synths), and mellowed out harmonies. There’s a warmth to this music, something inviting. The joy and exuberance is infectious.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. And it will probably be my go-to feel-good listen for some time.
