Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood
Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood
Boy howdy, it’s really the week of folk and alt-country isn’t it? It’s also one of the strongest release windows for music this year so far.
Waxahatchee has a very identifiable style of songwriting. She tends to linger on a melody, repeating it with different lyrics and only slight vocal variations. Just before it begins to seem too repetitive (and never after), she’ll bolt into a breathtaking bridge or dash into a vibrant solo. It’s like a tablecloth trick that never gets old.
Kate Crutchfield also has one of the most affecting and unique voices in the genre. I find it hard to describe, but there’s a texture and a feel to her vocal timbre. The word I’m tempted to use is viscosity. It lies and heavy and thick on the mix, and everything else is swimming in it.
I don’t know if this is better or worse than any of her previous records. To me, they all seem to be of a piece with each other - a continuation of excellence. She’s just really good at what she does, and she continues to do it. Thank God.
